I discovered painting in my early fifties. Oils, pastels and gouache have served me well in interpreting the forest that surrounded my home for over thirty years. Music has inspired abstract works and my interest in people opened the way to portraiture.

Apart from early tuition with Ted Hillyer and occasional workshops I am largely self-taught, spurred always by the challenge: “Can I do this?” I prefer to work when I am deeply excited by the subject or the idea and this philosophy has led me into occasionally sculpting in wood, lino printing, and creative weaving.

But my greatest joy is in representing something seen that demands to be painted!
Colour and composition are essential elements in my work, as are line and tonal values, especially in my pen drawings, the latter a form of meditation performed slowly and with love. With other mediums I like to work quickly and intuitively.

Over thirty-five years, there have been numerous awards, several one man exhibitions and regular exhibiting with local and regional art groups and my work is held in public and private collections in Australia and overseas.

It has been a privilege to encourage local artists through the Dorrigo Visual Art Group and the Arts Council of the Dorrigo, of which I am a Life Member, to occasionally teach painting skills, and to offer drawing tuition through Dorrigo U3A Inc.
