Dorrigo to Platypus Flat

dorrigo platapus flatDorrigo - Old Coast Road - Cedar Grove- Moonpah Forest Drive - Norman Jolly Memorial Grove – Platypus Flat – Dorrigo

On this day you can spend a few hours simply driving and looking, or even better, take a picnic lunch to enjoy beside the Nymboida River at Platypus Flat, and make a day of it.

The round drive through Cascade is very much subject to changing conditions and is best for 4WD. Otherwise, come back through Bostobrick.

Take the Tyringham Road to the right just over the bridge on the way out of Dorrigo, and turn left at Old Coast Road winding up through cattle properties till you reach the top and are confronted by spectacular views of the Great Dividing Range as it folds itself to the horizon.
You will soon rejoin the Tyringham Road again (this is a loop road) and carry on past the grove of Cedar trees and past the little mill village of Bostobrick.

One kilometre after the mill is Moonpar Forest Drive. Turn right here - it's a gravel road most of the way. About 7km on the right is a sign to the Norman Jolly Memorial Grove, where a walk through ancient tallowwood and brushbox trees demonstrates old growth forests. Some of these giants are estimated at over 600 years old.
You can take a short walk around the grove.

Drive on along Moonpar Road further, until you reach Platypus Flat, which is a camping and picnic area with facilities provided by National Parks. Here you will find pleasant picnic spots beside the river, and in the summer, will probably see people floating around on lilos. Just watch out for the goannas – they might steal your lunch!

If the road is okay, and your car is suitable, you can return to Dorrigo via Cascade, where one of the two timber mills closed down, and was bought and burnt down for a scene in the seventies film "Winds of Jarrah". Otherwise, return along Moonpar Road to Bostobrick and Dorrigo.
